Black sand and white houses, indigo sea and gray earth, green fields and petrified lava! No other island quite compares with the wild natural beauty of the volcanic island of Santorini. The history of Santorini is the history of the volcano. Contrasting layers of pumice-stone and santorinean soil, bear witness of the eruption of the volcano, which took place some 3,500 years ago, causing three quarters of the island to sink into the sea. The vivid marks of this enormous catastrophe, in connection with the ruins of a highly advanced civilization, remnants of which were recently found at Akrotiri, have lead many to believe that Santorini is the legendary lost Atlantis. The atmosphere of this unique island will intoxicate you, just as much as the taste of the strong wines and the view from Fira, the town perched on the top of sheer cliffs of the earth. The memories will remain with you long after your cruise to Santorini will be over.
Note: This trip it is about getting a taste for the island and actually seeing it to believe it. It is not a leisurely cruise nor at a slow pace. The island is crowded in high season with lots of group tours due to the many cruise ships that stop there as well. Know that you are going on coach tour with lots of people and be prepared for all that comes with that sort of tour. Despite being a long day when starting from Chania, it really is the only reasonable way to see Santorini in just a day & have a guided tour & a return coach back again. Also note that Diana's Travel is a booking agent & are not held responsible for the boat trip nor the running of the coach tours which are the responsibility of the Seajet Boat Organization.
